The challenge
Growers decide what to plant months before they sell, without an easy way to see how wholesale prices usually move, when a crop will reach the market, or how a planting month overlaps with heavy rain and the cyclone season.
The information exists — published market prices, the official planting calendar and weather records — but it is scattered and hard to compare. When everyone plants the same crop in the same window, the price falls just as the harvest arrives.

Daily wholesale prices
Prices and volumes for vegetables and fruits traded at the National Wholesale Market, read from the Agricultural Marketing Board’s published reports since January 2024.

Planting calendar by region
Crop guidance and planting windows from FAREI’s agricultural guide, filtered by the grower’s rainfall zone — sub-humid, humid or super-humid — and chosen month.

Profit scenarios per arpent
Estimated profit for a poor, typical and good year, combining the guide’s yields with harvest-month prices and the cost of seedlings and fertiliser.

Season risk and when to sell
Heavy-rain and cyclone exposure across the growing months, and price patterns by month and weekday to help choose when to sell.
How it is built
- Six sources, one database
- Python scripts read the market’s PDF reports, the FAREI guide, weather records for two stations, cyclone tracks near Mauritius, fertiliser prices and seedling prices, and join them in a single SQLite database.
- Automatic updates
- A scheduled job checks for new market reports on trading days, updates the data and republishes the static site.
Current status
The tool is live, free to use and updated automatically. As of October 2026 it holds 84,828 price records from 695 market days.
